Why Windstar Cruises Are the Best!

Windstar is my favorite cruise line because they have smaller ships that can go into the smaller ports the big ships can’t, and their excursions are so unique and individual. It isn’t like other cruise lines where you’re traveling with thousands of other guests. They typically have less than 300 guests on their ships, so everyone feels pampered and well cared for (their staff-to-guest ratio is 1:1.5)!

They can dock directly at smaller ports rather than take a tender boat in. This is so important because bad weather can prevent tender boats from going, which means you miss out on the port of call and excursions.

When it comes to excursions and onboard experiences, they focus on local, immersive activities so you can have truly authentic experiences.

Windstar is also the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, so the food is absolutely incredible. I was very impressed with the food on my trip, and think it’s some of the best in the world. I was also so impressed with the crew and staff members on board. You could really tell that they are one big family, and the personal touches they add are the best!

The Star Pride Cruise Ship

The Star Pride cruise ship is a gorgeous ship that was split in half and extended a couple of years ago. Originally, it had around 200 passengers, and now it has just over 300, so it’s still a small capacity for a better experience. This ship has approximately 150 suites, including 4 owner suites, 2 classic suites, 3 deluxe suites, 22 star balcony suites, 36 balcony suites, 58 ocean view suites, and 10 porthole suites.

Windstar Star Pride Cruise Ship - suite room

I stayed in an ocean-view suite with a beautiful picture window, and I absolutely loved it! There are two areas: a bedroom and a sitting area with a couch, a couple of chairs, and a large TV. We also had a mini bar that was fully stocked (with the all-inclusive package). We also had a safe, a beautiful walk-in closet, and a stunning bathroom with dual vanities.

Pro Tip: Make sure to ask for a suite that has a bathtub, so you can be floating on the ocean and floating in your bathtub at the same time!

Welcome to the beautiful Windstar ship, the Star Pride. This is a gorgeous ship that a couple of years ago was split in half and extended. Originally, it had around 200 passengers, now it has just over 300. This is a tour of this beautiful ship during my Icelandic adventure.

I’m Kim, The Abundant Traveler, and I have been to more than 65 countries and lived in five. I’m a travel expert and I’m here to inspire you, encourage you, and hope that you buy that plane ticket and get on that next Windstar cruise. Let’s go ahead and start our tour!

This ship has approximately 150 suites, four owner suites, two classic suites, three deluxe suites, 22 star balcony, 36 balcony suites, and then we move to the ocean view suites with the beautiful picture window, which is what I have, and then we have 58 ocean view suites and then 10 porthole suites.

Taking you on a tour of our suite, it’s suite 624 we have – we’re traveling as friends, so we have split the bed. You have two areas, you have your bedroom as well as a sitting area. You have a couch, a couple of chairs, a large tv, as well. We also have a mini bar that is fully stocked, and when you do the all-inclusive package, it is fully stocked anytime you want it with anything that you want from wine and beer and liquor, as well. You also have a safe and a beautiful walk-in closet. The bathroom is stunning with dual vanity, and make sure to ask for a suite that actually has a bathtub so you can be floating on the ocean and floating in your bathtub.

Now. let’s leave our suite on the sixth floor and head towards the center of the ship and the beautiful spiral staircase that is the focal point of this gorgeous Star Pride. From the center spiral staircase, and not to worry, they do have elevators, as well, but from the staircase, you can get all the way up to the eighth floor where you have the sun deck, all the way down to the third floor where, they have the Amphora restaurant, where you are eating most evenings.

Now that we have walked down to the third floor, let’s go ahead and start our amenities and restaurant tour of the ship. Now, note the Windstar is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, so you know that you’re going to be having the best food and the best wine choices of any cruise line that’s available. So, our evenings are spent at the Amphora restaurant. This restaurant is a sit-down formal restaurant; the tables are a little bit larger than they were previously. Before, they split the ship in half so there are fewer two-top tables, more four-top, more large tables. And actually, I really like that instead because I get to sit with some other guests and get to know other people on the ship. The menu, it is a set menu in the evening. It does change, but you get to order your starter, your main course, a dessert, as well. You can also have your all-inclusive wine package; you can also order specific wines off the wine list for a small upcharge. The Amphora- the food is exceptional!

One of the fun things that we did is, we did their market tour, which meant that we actually walked through the entire galley and got our food one night. We got to meet the entire galley staff, the chef, and everything. It was so much fun to go through the galley and see everybody, and see how all the inner workings happen here on the Star Pride.

Now that we’ve seen the third floor, let’s head to the fourth. This is where you embark and disembark off the ship. It’s pretty simple. Most of the rest of the area around the spiral staircase is for crew. There are several suites on the fourth floor, as well, but that’s about it for getting on and off the ship.

So, let’s go ahead and talk about the fifth floor. The fifth floor is where you have the reception, where if you have any questions about your cruise or need information about the ship or if you need extra things, as well, that’s where you go to the reception. You also have a screening room on the fifth floor, as well. So, I needed a private meeting room, so they allowed me to use the screening room. This is a room where you have private screenings of movies or you can play chess, etc. in there. This is also where you have the lounge. The lounge is where you go through the entire process of your health questionnaire, checking in, getting your photo made and everything when you first get on the ship. This is also where daily, you get the information about the different ports. They also do the captain’s introduction, and the entire officer staff came in and introduced themselves in the lounge. It’s sort of a tiered sort of a amphitheater-style room. It’s perfect- it’s, there’s a dance floor, as well. It’s a great space to do a lot of the things that the ship needs to do to inform you, as the guest, what’s going on during your itinerary.

Also, on the fifth floor during certain times of the day, you can book your excursions. Make sure to book your excursions in advance to make sure that you have a spot on those amazing excursions. Also on the fifth floor is where you will find the team to help you book an additional Windstar cruise. You get a discount and you get extra perks if you book a cruise while you’re on a cruise, so definitely worth taking a little bit of time and finding your next perfect Windstar cruise.

Additionally, if you’re headed on a Windstar cruise around Iceland, then go to the description below and download my free packing guide. I promise there are several things you’re going to need and you’re going to not know about unless you download that free guide. So, it’s free, might as well download it.

Let’s go ahead and talk about the sixth floor. Here on the sixth floor, this is where you’re going to find the Star Boutique and get all of your branded merchandise. All of your Windstar t-shirts and sweatshirts and bands and you’re also going to be able to find sunscreen, things that you forgot, as well as jewelry and other gifts in case you cannot find anything on land to take home to your friends and family. Also on the sixth floor, this is where you’re going to find Cuadro 44, which is the tapas restaurant. We went there last night and it was delicious! Jamon iberico, we had potatoes bravas, we had a tortilla, we had sea bream.Bbeautiful restaurant, amazing spanish wines, as well. Very intimate and quite small. I would say probably 35 people can actually sit inside the restaurant at one time.

A pro tip about going on a Windstar cruise: as soon as you board, go up and make your reservations for the two restaurants, Cuadro 44 and Candles, which is a steak restaurant. So, as soon as you arrive, make sure that you make those reservations.

And the most unique secret thing about the sixth floor is, at the very front of the ship, there is a secret hatch and you can go out. There is a hot tub out there and a deck, and you can go be Titanic at the front of the ship on the sixth floor. Not everybody knows about it! After a couple of days, people realize that it’s there and it gets a little more crowded, but make sure you’re the first to get out there and get your photos there and get your Titanic photos before anybody else does.

And last but not least, on the sixth floor you have the Compass Rose, which is at the back of the ship. This is where you go get your boogie on at night, cocktails and fun and entertainment at the end of dinner every single night. It’s available during the day if you want to have a drink, as well, but really it doesn’t kick in until around 8 p.m. There’s always great music; there’s two bands here on the ship, which i’ve absolutely enjoyed. We have dance, we have line dance, we have done trivia, we have done all kinds of crazy things in the Compass Rose.

So, now that we have finished the sixth floor, let’s go ahead and go up to the seventh floor. On the seventh floor, inside, this is where you’re going to find the spa. It’s a world spa where you can get your massages, your sauna, you can do your nails, you can get your hair done if you want to, you can have a facial. This is also where you’re going to find the gym, but what is special about the seventh floor is this is the pool deck and the hot tub deck. This is where you’re going to be able to lay out. Of course, we’re in Iceland, there’s not much laying out in Iceland, but this is where you’re going to find the small intimate pool here and a big deck. This is also where you’re going to find the tinders and the lifeboats, as well, but this – you fight – you can find a little bit of shade, as well as sun here on the pool deck.

Also on the seventh floor, this is where you’re going to find the bridge where the captain, Captain Ricardo on the ship right now, is going to be and all of his team. What is so unique about Windstar, it’s a open bridge policy, so most of the time that you’re cruising with them, you can go in and check out what’s going on, ask them the questions, learn how to drive the ship – they won’t let you drive it, but you’ll learn all about navigating the ship and all that they do. So, definitely Windstar is unique in the fact that it is an open bridge policy.

And also where you’re going to be having breakfast and lunch and also in the evenings, by reservation only, the Candles restaurant is also on the seventh floor. It is called the Veranda or La Veranda, and it is at the aft or at the back of the ship. It’s a buffet for lunch and for breakfast. There are a few small items you can order off the menu for breakfast and for lunch, but mostly it’s buffet and then in the evening, the most beautiful filet lamb chops, as well as fish and seafood. It’s just a beautiful, beautiful restaurant called Candles, by reservation only, and it’s at the very, very back. So, no matter where you look, there’s amazing food on this one, Star Pride, as well as all the Windstar ships, simply because they are the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation.

One of my favorite spots on the ship is on the eighth floor, called the Yacht Club. This is at the front of the ship, just above the bridge. There’s plenty of lounge chairs, there’s a couple of couches, as well. You can come here, have a cocktail, have a cappuccino, you can play board games, get to know your other passengers. It’s my favorite spot to be in the afternoon.

Also, this is the upper pool deck on the eighth floor. This is where you’re going to have lounge chairs. You’re also going to be able to look down on the seventh floor and check out the pool and the hot tub. There is no shade there, so if you want to get a suntan when you’re not in Iceland, then this is the place to be.

Also up here on the 8th floor between the main pool deck and the yacht club, this is where you’re going to find the Star Bar and the Star Grill. In the afternoon, they do here in Iceland, they’re doing hamburgers, lamb burgers, they’re also doing brats and sausages with french fries, etc. and it’s great! So, you can have a snack in the afternoon, either in the yacht club or actually at the Star Grill, and also you got to pick up your cocktails and your wine at the Star Bar.

That sums up my tour of the beautiful, new and improved Star Pride! Make sure to check out this video in Iceland, as well, and make sure to subscribe. Thank you so much for watching and I’ll see you guys on the next video. Make sure if you see me out and about around the world to stop and say hello. Take care, see y’all guys soon – bye!
