What Is Transition Weather?
Transition weather refers to the mixed conditions that occur between seasons, most notably during the shift from summer to fall or winter to spring. During this time, there’s a blend of weather patterns from both seasons, creating a unique and often unpredictable climate. When traveling, you can encounter this more often, especially if you’re crossing state or country borders into different climates or elevations.
Expect fluctuating temperatures, increased rainfall, and shifting wind patterns. Daytime highs can range from pleasantly warm to surprisingly chilly, while nights often bring cooler conditions overall. This is why it’s best to be prepared for quick weather changes and pack accordingly, which my fall packing list will show you how to do!
Fall Packing List Items
I have a lot of packing tips I’ll share with you later (click here to jump ahead), but first, I want to give you an idea of exactly what you should be packing. Below is a fall packing list that also works for other transition weather trips, broken down by each layer. It’s full of fall must haves and key pieces that will take you from hot to cold and back again. If you like what you see, then click any of the links to see where you can buy the items!
Start with Warm Weather Layers
When planning your fall or transition weather packing, start with the warmer weather layers first. Think about tank tops, t-shirts, button-down shirts, skirts, shorts, and dresses that can be worn with another layer on top or below them. If you can’t go without your favorite pair of jeans, just make sure you’ll wear them for at least half your trip to justify the packing space.
Overall, try to stick to items that can and will be worn more than once. For example, don’t bring a dress that doesn’t look good with a sweater on top or a long-sleeved shirt underneath. When packing skirts and shorts, try them on with tights underneath to make sure that works, too. Remember, these items are meant to be worn in both warm and cold weather.
Add Cold Weather Layers
Next, add the cold weather layers, like long sleeve shirts, sweaters, cardigans, and shackets (shirt-jacket hybrid). To keep your legs warm, pack a pair or two of tights and leggings. You may also want to pack light thermal tops and bottoms for days that stay cold and don’t warm up at all.
Faux leather leggings are a fantastic option for days when you want to look dressy while still being comfy. You can even find some that are lined with fleece for extra warmth (like these that also look like actual pants with belt loops!).
Pack Light Outerwear Items
Now, it’s time for the outer layers to protect you from the cold, wind, and rain that may come your way. A light, packable jacket that’s water resistant is versatile enough to handle most situations. A denim jacket or bomber jacket offers both style and functionality for milder days and can take you from day to night.
For trips where you’ll have colder weather, a packable down jacket can provide warmth without the bulk and can be easily packed away when you don’t need it. If you plan your layering right, you can get away without a heavier puffer jacket or thick winter coat.
Footwear
When it comes to adding footwear to your fall packing list, it’s best to choose options that can handle various weather conditions and activities. Ankle boots are perfect for both city strolls and light hiking (see my post on the best travel ankle boots). Additionally, waterproof shoes are essential to keep your feet dry and comfortable during unpredictable fall weather.
Whatever you pack, make sure they’re comfortable enough for long days of exploration and can match different outfits. There’s no point wasting space in your luggage for something you’ll only wear once, no matter how cute they are. These ankle boots are comfy enough to walk around in all day and stylish enough for a night out.
Accessories
Finally, don’t forget to pack accessories that can add both warmth and style to your outfits! Scarves, hats, and gloves not only provide extra warmth but can also change the look of your outfit from day to day. Pashmina is known for being soft and warm, and this pashmina scarf is big enough to wear as a scarf or a makeshift top. Always bring a pair of sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen for those sunny days (and even cloudy ones, too!).

Key Fall Packing Tips
Now that I’ve shown you what to pack, I’ll talk about additional packing tips to help you narrow down your fall weather outfits and accessories. Even with the lists above, it can still be tempting to shove as much “just in case” stuff into your bags. I encourage you to challenge yourself! It is possible to have a pared-down wardrobe that fits your needs and is stylish.
Here are some of my best tips to help you pack efficiently for your fall adventures:
Pack Light, Stay Prepared
The key to successful fall travel is balancing lightweight packing with preparedness. Focus on versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, allowing you to create multiple outfits from fewer pieces. This approach not only saves space but also provides flexibility in your wardrobe choices.
Check Extended Weather Forecasts
Before your trip, regularly check the extended weather forecast for your destination on sites like Weather.com and AccuWeathe. You’ll want to check them in advance to help decide what to pack and again within the week leading up to your departure, just in case there are any last-minute changes.

Choose a Versatile Color Palette
Go for a neutral color palette when choosing your transitional or fall weather outfits. Colors such as black, white, gray, beige, and navy are excellent choices, as they can be easily combined to create various outfits. This also helps you simplify your packing and save space in your luggage!
Practice the Art of Layering
Layering is your best friend for fall travel! Start with a base layer of classic hot weather items, like t-shirts, skirts, and dresses. Add mid-layers such as light sweaters or cardigans, and top it off with a versatile outer layer like a waterproof jacket or a stylish coat. If you need to, start the layering with a tank top to keep the core of your body warmer. This way, you can adjust your outfit throughout the day as temperatures and weather patterns fluctuate.
Pay Attention to Materials and Fabrics
Choose fabrics that are both comfortable and practical for warm and cooler weather. Think lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials. Merino wool is excellent for regulating body temperature and resisting odors. This has the added benefit of allowing you to rewear items more without washing in between. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics keep your clothes looking fresh, even after being packed in a suitcase.

Wear Heavier Items on the Plane
Save space in your luggage by wearing or carrying your bulkiest items during travel. This could include your heaviest shoes, jacket, and/or sweater. If it’s too hot to wear a jacket or sweater, carry it in your arms or place it in your carry-on luggage. Not only does this free up valuable suitcase space, but it also keeps you prepared for potentially chilly airplane cabins.
How to Pack Your Fall Must Haves
Choose Your Luggage
Whether you prefer hard-sided or soft-sided luggage, you’ll want to bring a suitcase that keeps your belongings safe and allows everything to be compact and fit well. It should be sturdy enough to handle being thrown around but also light enough to carry up or down stairs, if needed, and dragged down uneven streets.
Check out my video on how to find the perfect luggage for your trip as well as my post on the best backpacks to bring as a carry-on or for day trips. Use a travel-sized toiletry bag to keep your toiletries and personal items neatly organized and easily accessible while you’re on the go.
Efficient Packing Techniques
Use packing cubes or compression bags to organize your belongings and maximize space in your luggage. Careful not to overstuff the compression cubes or they won’t be able to compress down properly. Roll softer items like t-shirts and underwear, and fold stiffer items like jeans and button-up shirts. This method not only saves space but also helps prevent wrinkles.
What’s On Your Fall Packing List?
By following these fall packing list tips, you’ll be well-prepared to travel through multiple climates and unpredictable weather with confidence and style. Remember, the key is to stay flexible and prepared while keeping your luggage manageable. Happy travels!
