As the country’s capital, Mexico City is transformed into a bustling hub of sparkling lights, elaborate decorations, and nacimientos (nativity scenes) throughout the Christmas period. Parks, plazas, and markets come to life with giant Christmas trees, ice-skating rinks, and the smell of fresh buñuelos (fried, sweet treats made of dough, sugar, and cinnamon) and ponche navideño (warm fruit punch) in the air.
In Mexico City, the festive period kicks off on December 12th with parades, feasts, and fireworks to celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe (the Virgin Mary).
