21 Best Things To Do in Split, Croatia – Travel Guide

Split, the second biggest city in Croatia, is located in the north of the country. It’s an eclectic mix of the modern and ancient (which is what makes it so popular with every YouTube influencer). The city’s bustling waterfront and labyrinthine old city have an electric atmosphere that appeals to both culture vultures and adventure travel lovers. Of course, what put it on the world’s travel map was the popular HBO series Game of ThronesSplit was a filming location.

There are lots of things to do in Split, but I think two nights are sufficient for all the must-see sights. This will also give you time to sneak in one or two Split day trips and enjoy more of a leisure travel trip to this beautiful city.

#1: Klis Fortress

This medieval fortress was the seat of many Croatian Kings and was lost and conquered multiple times during the Ottoman wars in Europe. The climb to the fortress and the $9 entry fee is worth it for the beautiful views. But, if you’re short on time, this is something you can miss.

#2: Diocletian Palace Split

Consisting of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the world, the sprawling Diocletian’s Palace takes up about half of old town Split. The massive structure looks more like a fortress and is the historic heart of the town.

#3: Peristil Square Split (Peristyle Square)

This impressive central plaza flanked by two Corinthian colonnades is a part of the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Go there at noon to watch a reenactment of Roman times. Sit on the steps surrounding the plaza in the evening and enjoy traditional Croatian songs as well as modern music. This is a great place to sit back and relax with a glass of wine or beer as you listen to some Croatian music.

#4: Cathedral of Saint Domnius

Located within the Diocletian’s Palace, this 7th-century catholic cathedral is one of the oldest in the world.  Climb to the top of the 57-meter bell tower for sweeping views of the city and you’ll understand why it’s the favorite spot of Instagram influencersRomanesque in   style, this Roman Catholic church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is the second oldest structure used by any Christian cathedral.

Don’t miss the chance to listen to some Dalmatian folk songs and Klapa music, a traditional form of singing in Croatia. This unique aspect of Croatian culture can be experienced in the vestibule of the Diocletian’s Palace.

#7: Statue of Grgur Ninski

The imposing 25-foot statue of Grgur Ninski, a 10th-century bishop who played an important role in Croatia’s history and culture, is one of the most popular things to see in Split, maybe because there’s a legend that rubbing the statue’s big toe on the left foot brings you good luck!

Why don’t more people count shopping as one of the travel essentials for women? If you’re a die-hard shopper, Split shopping will spoil you for choice. The Green Market Split (Stari Pazar) is a great place to pick up inexpensive souvenirs, and the old town has lots of shops selling everything under the sun. For international brands, head to the main shopping street, Marmontova.

#9: Konoba Split

One of the best things to do in Split Croatia is to eat at a traditional restaurant called a Konoba. We went to a Michelin starred Konoba, often touted as one of the best restaurants in Split, and it didn’t disappoint. My favorite was a chickpea stew with octopus in a brown sauce. Yum!

#10: Game of Thrones Tour

When you see old town Split, you’ll understand why the producers of this very famous show chose to film here. If you’re a fan, go to the shopping area underneath the Diocletian’s Palace. This used to be the cellar and sewer, but on the show, this was the place where Khaleesi kept her dragons.

#11: Krka Waterfalls

One of Croatia’s most famous attractions, these magnificent waterfalls and gorges in Krka National Park are spectacular. An organized tour is a hassle-free way to get to this scenic area, but there are public transport options available.

#12: Day Trip to Plitvice

If you’re in Split, a day trip to Plitvice Croatia is an absolute must. It’s an easy drive on the national highway. Made famous by the numerous turquoise lakes and cascading waterfalls, this is what all the travel brochures advertise when they’re trying to sell you trips to Croatia.

Sixteen lakes, interconnected by waterfalls, and set against a backdrop of 300 square kilometers of verdant woodland that is home to a variety of wildlife. One of the must-do tours from Split. When you see it for yourself, it won’t be difficult to believe why this is one of the most popular things to do in Croatia.

#14: Food Tour Split

We did a small-group food tour that we booked through our Airbnb. A great way to spend 3 hours browsing in the fish and vegetable markets and tasting some local foods, including, wine, meat, cheese, and oils. Our guide, Lucy, was a local and very knowledgeable. One thing I can say about the Croatians – they love to feed you.

For another food tour option, have you ever heard of eatwith? They are a tour company that specializes in unique food experiences. One example I found, you can book to eat a traditional dinner with a Croatian family. Pretty unique right?

The Split to Mostar day trip is a full-day excursion that includes a scenic drive through Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stop at the walled city of Pocitelj on the way. The best way to see Mostar is through a walking tour that showcases the beauty of this medieval town steeped in Ottoman history.
