My Experience at a Montana Dude Ranch
If you know two things about me, it’s probably that I love to travel and I love horses! That’s why I’ll take any chance I can to stay at a dude ranch. Waking up to the sound of horses nickering in the distance and walking outside my cabin to breathe in the crisp mountain air was my favorite way to start each day.
Where I Stayed: Circle Bar Ranch
Circle Bar Ranch quickly captured my heart with its authentic Western charm and exceptional hospitality! This authentic Montana dude ranch operates seasonally, welcoming guests from late May through September when the Montana weather is at its finest.
They only accommodate 30-40 guests at a time and have plenty of activities to keep everyone busy. The staff were all excellent, particularly the all-female wrangler team, who impressed me with their horsemanship skills. They were so cool!
The ranch is a stunning 520 acres, located at the base of the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. The landscape reminded me so much of the popular Yellowstone TV show – wide open pastures and rolling hills.
The remote setting (you’ll travel 13 miles down a dirt road to reach the property) makes for a peaceful retreat far from the distractions of everyday life.
The Ranch Accommodations
Circle Bar Ranch has eight cabins plus a cook house, ranch house, and three additional suites. So, some of the cabins are more like single rooms, and some have multiple rooms and living/dining areas inside. What impressed me most was how the cabins are thoughtfully spaced across the property, offering genuine privacy, which isn’t as common at many dude ranches in Montana.
Each cabin features its own porch overlooking green pastureland and the scenic Judith River. Rather than the rustic log cabin aesthetic you might expect, the accommodations are more of a charming farmhouse style. It feels welcoming and very cozy, like your grandma’s farmhouse back in the day!
The central gathering space features a large fireplace surrounded by comfortable couches. Overall, the whole property has that nostalgic feeling that makes you want to settle in and never leave.
The Ranch Activities
Horseback riding is THE main event at this Montana dude ranch, with two rides offered daily. Each morning, I watched in awe as the wranglers “jingled” the horses from the back pasture into the corral – a traditional ranching practice that starts each day. The all-female wrangler team, all in their twenties, impressed everyone with their skill and strength.
The riding schedule follows a weekly pattern, starting every Sunday. So, Sunday is typically just a check-in day. Mondays and Tuesdays have two slow rides as well as other activities around the ranch. Wednesday and Friday offer the chance to participate in cattle drives, moving herds between pastures.
There are fast rides available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, but you need to pass a riding test on a slow ride before you can participate in these. Fridays feature a special breakfast ride, and then there’s a final Saturday morning ride before check-out.
Beyond horseback riding, Circle Bar Ranch offers plenty of other activities, including:
- Archery
- Sport shooting (for guests 16 and older)
- UTV tours around the property and national forest
- Ax throwing
- Fishing (license required)
- River tubing (be prepared for cold water!)
- Line dancing
- Private riding lessons ($20 per person for group lessons, $75 for private instruction)
- Family-friendly activities like pony rides, baseball games, and musical chairs for younger guests
Relaxation & Entertainment
After active days exploring the beautiful Montana countryside, the ranch’s hot tub provided the perfect place to soothe my tired muscles while stargazing. While there was no pool available during my stay, the natural beauty surrounding the property offered plenty of opportunities for relaxation.
Evening entertainment often included traditional Western activities like square dancing and connecting with the other guests in the common areas. The Rec Room had cards, ping pong, horseshoes, and other games to enjoy. The lack of television and limited cell service encouraged genuine connections with fellow travelers and a welcome digital detox!
The Food
The dining experience at Circle Bar Ranch deserves special mention – the meals were truly phenomenal! There were three meals a day included, with a buffet breakfast at 8:00 AM, buffet lunch around 12:30 PM, and plated dinner at 6:30 PM.
Meals were announced by the charming ring of a cattle bell that echoed across the property – so fun! As someone with gluten-free dietary needs, I particularly appreciated the kitchen staff’s attentiveness to dietary restrictions and preferences.
One thing to note: guests should bring their own alcoholic beverages and sodas, as these aren’t provided by the ranch (yet!). There are a few places within 30 minutes of the ranch to grab whatever drinks you’d like and bring back to the ranch.

How to Get There
Getting to Circle Bar Ranch requires some planning. The closest major airport is in Great Falls, Montana, just under two hours away. There are some closer regional airports, but it’s more difficult and expensive to find flights there.
I strongly recommend renting a car regardless of which airport you choose! While you could schedule airport pickup services, having your own transportation allows you to explore the area on your own, especially if you want to drive to Bozeman.
How long should I stay?
Because Circle Bar Ranch operates on a weekly schedule, I recommend staying a full week if you can. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the ranch lifestyle and participate in all the weekly activities without feeling rushed.
You can spend less time here as long as you book a minimum of three nights, but you’ll miss some of the scheduled activities.
What should I pack?
Packing appropriately for a Montana dude ranch stay is essential for both comfort and full enjoyment of all the activities. The temperature varies throughout the day and the nights tend to be cooler, so layers are your best friend! My essential packing list includes:
For riding: Long pants (jeans work well), boots with a heel, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
For daily wear: A mix of short and long-sleeved shirts, leggings or comfortable pants, a sports bra for active days, and a jacket for evenings.
For hiking: Sturdy boots, walking poles, and long pants to protect against brush.
Additional essentials: Extra socks, warm pajamas, a headlamp or flashlight, a water bottle, bug spray, and any preferred alcoholic beverages to enjoy in your cabin.
The dress code at the ranch is definitely casual, so leave the formal clothing at home and embrace the Western lifestyle with comfortable, practical clothing!

Other Things to Do in Montana
While the ranch experience is plenty enough to fill up your week, you might also want to explore the surrounding area. Great Falls is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away, offering several attractions despite being somewhat expensive to visit. The C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls houses an impressive collection of Western art and is well worth the trip for art enthusiasts.
For those willing to venture further, Bozeman is approximately 3 hours from the ranch and offers a charming downtown with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Renting a car is absolutely essential for these excursions, as the remote location of most Montana dude ranches means limited public transportation options.
Local tack stores provide opportunities to purchase authentic Western gear as souvenirs of your Montana adventure. These stops offer a glimpse into the practical equipment used in everyday ranch life while supporting local businesses.
