My Experience at a Wyoming Dude Ranch
This Wyoming dude ranch experience was exactly the reset I needed! I absolutely love horses, so any time I get to spend time with them, I’m just in awe of them. I feel more connected to nature and to myself.
Each day brought new adventures, like horseback riding through scenic trails, watching the morning “jingle” as horses thundered through the property, and evenings around the communal fire pit, sharing stories with fellow guests.
What makes a dude ranch truly special isn’t just the activities, but the sense of community that forms among guests and staff alike. And, of course, the horses!
Where I Stayed: Blackwater Creek Ranch
Blackwater Creek Ranch is a historic dude ranch nestled in the natural beauty of Shoshone National Forest, near the Shoshone River and surrounded by the majestic Absaroka Mountain Range. Located just outside of Cody, Wyoming, and 15 miles from the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, this cozy lodge and guest ranch accommodates only 25-35 guests at a time.
The ranch operates seasonally from late May through September, with mid-June being the ideal time to visit after the snow melt reveals the full beauty of the landscape. Blackwater Creek is actually part of the True Ranch Collection, which includes six ranches across Wyoming, Montana, and Arizona.
Overall, I found the staff to be just excellent, really friendly, and accommodating to dietary needs and restrictions. The food was good and the cabins are cute – just what you’d expect for a Wyoming dude ranch experience.
What’s interesting is that the horses and staff migrate between the northern ranches in summer and the Arizona properties in winter. So, the horses and staff here at Blackwater Creek will go to Rancho de La Osa in winter. It’s very cool and efficient! And that means if you visit more than one ranch, you’ll likely get to ride the same horse at each location.
If you’re looking for a Wyoming dude ranch as a solo traveler, group of friends, or a family, I definitely recommend Blackwater Creek Ranch!
The Ranch Accommodations
As I said, the accommodations at Blackwater Creek Ranch are just what you’d expect from a dude ranch in Wyoming: rustic charm with modern comforts. The property features eleven historic log cabins, with the classic red wood exteriors and cozy interiors that invite you to wrap up in a blanket and relax after a day of activities.
What makes the layout really cool is how all the cabins face inward toward a central fire pit, creating a natural gathering space for guests to connect. Some of the cabins have a view of the beautiful Shoshone River (pronounced “Sho-Shown”) bordering the ranch, adding to both the scenery and recreational opportunities.
It’s worth noting that the ranch’s location means you’re truly in wild country — bear spray is a must whenever you leave the property. They gave us some bear spray when we checked in, which seemed so crazy, but safety first, y’all!
The Activities
Because it’s so small, the ranch is able to organize daily activities. The activity schedule at Blackwater Creek Ranch is thoughtfully structured to provide a complete Western experience. When you stay here, you can enjoy:
- Horseback riding
- Archery and axe throwing
- Target practice (with BB guns)
- Hiking trails
- White water rafting
- Fly fishing
- Rodeo nights
- Tours of Yellowstone
Horseback riding is naturally the centerpiece, with two rides offered daily. These are walking-pace rides suitable for all experience levels, making them good even for first-time riders.
One of the highlights of each day is watching the “jingle,” which is when the wranglers bring the 30-35 horses in from the night pasture to the day corral at 7 AM, and then return them at 5 PM. Seeing these magnificent animals thundering through the property is a spectacle not to be missed!
Tuesdays feature whitewater rafting adventures (included in your stay). Wednesdays are dedicated to all-day Yellowstone expeditions, departing at 7:30 AM with packed lunches for a full day exploring the lower loop and spending about two hours at Old Faithful.
Thursday evenings, guests are treated to the authentic Western tradition of the Cody Rodeo. On Saturdays, there’s a morning breakfast ride before departure.
Other activities include twice-weekly guided hikes, archery, BB gun shooting, ax throwing, and fly fishing (though you’ll need to secure your own Wyoming fishing license, plus a special permit for Yellowstone).
Relaxation & Entertainment
While there are plenty of adventurous activities at this Wyoming dude ranch, there’s plenty of opportunity for relaxation, too. A dedicated recreation cabin houses games and television for indoor entertainment. There’s a full bar inside the main lodge to enjoy a drink while you play cards or pool, or just decompress from the day.
A lot of guests hang out at the central fire pit area in the evenings, sharing stories and roasting marshmallows. There’s also an outdoor pool that’s open seasonally, depending on the weather.
The Food
Meals at Blackwater Creek Ranch are served three times daily in a community dining room, buffet-style. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are typically locally inspired dishes and traditional ranch recipes.
The food was really good, with hearty, delicious options to fuel long days of outdoor activities. The kitchen staff is accommodating to dietary restrictions and preferences, which was good for me because I have to be gluten-free.
The communal dining experience is another aspect that sets this Wyoming dude ranch apart from typical vacations. Eating with fellow guests and ranch staff creates a family-like atmosphere that just adds to the overall experience.

How to Get There
Getting to Blackwater Creek Ranch does require some planning. The closest major airport is in Billings, Montana, about two hours away. Cody, Wyoming, is about 45 minutes away but has a smaller airport with more limited flights.
I strongly recommend renting a car regardless of which airport you choose! While you could schedule airport pickup services, having your own transportation allows you to explore the area on your own. You might want to spend time visiting Cody’s attractions, like the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
The ranch’s location, just 15 miles from Yellowstone’s east entrance, makes it an ideal base for exploring America’s first national park, too. That just really adds to the authentic experience of a dude ranch in Wyoming!
How long should I stay?
Blackwater Creek Ranch operates on a unique schedule with full-week stays (Sunday to Saturday) or half-week options (Sunday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Saturday). Check-out is by 11 AM, with check-in for new guests beginning at 2 PM.
Based on my experience, I’d recommend the full-week stay if possible. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the ranch lifestyle and participate in all the weekly activities without feeling rushed. The half-week option works well for those with limited time, but you’ll inevitably miss some of the scheduled excursions.
What should I pack?
Packing appropriately for a Wyoming dude ranch stay is essential for both comfort and full enjoyment of all the activities. The mountain climate means warm days and cool nights, so layers are your best friend! My essential packing list includes:
For riding: Long pants (jeans work well), boots with a heel, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
For daily wear: A mix of short and long-sleeved shirts, leggings or comfortable pants, a sports bra for active days, and a jacket for evenings.
For whitewater rafting: Swimsuit, water shoes, waterproof phone case, and sunscreen.
For hiking: Sturdy boots, walking poles, and long pants to protect against brush.
Additional essentials: Extra socks, warm pajamas, a headlamp or flashlight, a water bottle, bug spray, and any preferred alcoholic beverages to enjoy in your cabin.
The dress code at the ranch is definitely casual, so leave the formal clothing at home and embrace the Western lifestyle with comfortable, practical clothing!
