Unique Travel Gifts under $20 | Gifts for Someone Traveling Abroad

Looking for unique travel gifts?  Well, I’ve rounded up the 15 best travel gift ideas for someone traveling abroad. I’ve got great travel gifts for him and her. I’ve also included my personal favorite travel gifts for someone traveling abroad. And, yes they’re all under $20.

Are you looking for travel gifts, or maybe you’re a traveler yourself and you’re making your holiday wish list! Read on to find the best stocking stuffers and small gifts for all the world travelers in your life.

So what do you get the traveler who has everything? Don’t worry. I’ve got you covered. Best of all–it won’t break the bank. These thoughtful travel gift ideas are an absolute delight, despite their budget price tag.

Check out my YouTube video and scroll down to find the best travel gifts for him and her this year. Everything on this list was personally tested and recommended by yours truly. These recommendations are based on my personal experiences with these products.

A lot of this travel gear will work for travelers of any gender, age, or type. These products work whether you’re gifting them to a solo traveler, empty nesters or it’s a travel gift idea for him. A lot of these rec’s are great gifts for business travelers as well as students studying abroad.

And, as I mentioned all these travel gifts are available on Amazon. That’s another bonus. Now there’s no reason to drive yourself crazy scouring dozens of websites or fighting the crowds at the mall.

These luggage tags are just so cool. They’re stainless steel and come with a stainless steel loop wrap. You fill out a card with your information and slip it inside. These are great because they’re not the flimsy airline ones, and they’re not the plastic version that bends or breaks the first time you use it. These luggage tags last!  These unique travel gifts are perfect air travel accessories, and I always use two–one for my carry-on and one for my checked bag.

I love my luggage weigher–is that a word?! Jokes aside, I can pack a ton of stuff in a small suitcase. While it’s a great skill to have, it means I’m usually overweight at the airport.

This little gadget prevents that embarrassing airport scenario. You know the one where you end up transferring your underwear into two different suitcases in front of dozens of strangers. Get this luggage scale and you’ll never have to face that uncomfortable situation again. This is a great travel gift for her.

I can’t live without these! In the U.S. you can only take 3oz of liquids with you in a carry-on bag. These actually give you an extra .4 oz., for a total of 3.4oz or 100ml. But they’re still TSA friendly.

Also, I love the huge hole that makes filling it up easy. And they’re squeezable! You don’t have to shake the contents and hit them on the shower wall to squeeze out the last drop…no wasted product.  These are super cool travel gifts!

It’s so easy to pack your favorite shampoo, conditioner, or lotion with these toiletry tubes. This is a fantastic travel gift idea for your girlfriends who are very particular about their hair products. You know the ones who would never allow hotel shampoo on their heads.

They keep your product safe too. I’ve never had one leak. They are a must have for any traveler!

This perfectly-sized travel wallet holds travel documents, credit cards, and itineraries. It also features RFID blocking technology. That means no thieves or hackers can scan your wallet for personal info or card numbers. RFID protection is one of the best ways to prevent identity theft.

In regards to the wallet’s design, I just love how thin it is. The size and the space are absolutely fantastic. It’s the perfect traveler’s wallet. And, it’s unisex. What a great travel gift idea!

If you or someone you love has to travel with multiple passports, this wallet is a great choice. It easily accommodates up to 4 passports, and it is a perfect gift for world travelers. I love this wallet so much and it’s actually under $10!

This travel eye mask completely blocks out all the light. It’s like a pair of blackout curtains for your eyes. The cheaper eye masks let light filter in by the nose or under your eyes, but not these ones by Lewis N Clark.  The product description says it’s for men, but I find it’s a perfect fit for me as well.

They’re also adjustable so they can fit everyone from a big and tall guy to a petite woman. No need to worry sizing for this cool travel gift. These soft, comfortable, and machine-washable eye masks are great gifts for anyone going traveling.

I use this light all the time for taking pictures while traveling. Yes, I have a head torch. But, it’s not exactly appropriate to put that on in the middle of dinner at a Michelin starred restaurant. This is such a unique travel gift to give someone who is traveling abroad and loves to take photos in dark lighting.

Just beware. This unqiue travel gift is not the most flattering light to take a selfie. But it works great for pictures of food and wine to post to your Instagram.

While this has to go in your checked luggage, it’s totally worth bringing along. How many times have you brought a bottle of wine back to your hotel room only to realize there’s no opener?

That’s where this handy gadget comes in. It’s a nice quality, heavy duty wine opener. I’ve actually gifted this one myself, and I think it’s the perfect travel gift for men.

What a perfect travel gift for her! This is a beautiful, blank page journal with a leather wrap. It’s perfect for your traveling friends who like to write, sketch, or color. It could even work as a bullet journal.

The pages are spiral bound and easy to remove. It’s just a really nice leather-bound journal ideal for creative travelers. I also gave this travel gift to one of my girlfriends and she loves it.

I love these collapsible water bottles. They take up so much less space compared to the huge metal ones. Like all the other travel gifts on this list, these are from Amazon. These water bottles are a great travel gift idea–especially for your friends who are health and fitness fanatics.  This is a great gift for someone going traveling in the mountains on a hiking adventure.

It’s a silicone water bottle that easily rolls and wraps up. What’s not to love about this unique travel gift?

Ok for those of you who are prone to losing your keys and wallet while traveling, you’ve got to get this Tile. These little squares connect to an app on your phone, and the app locates the lost item(s) for you.

These Tile Mates are also available in a pack of 4. The 4-pack is under $40 so you could get that and give a tile mate to 3 different people and keep one for yourself. Giving away 3 and keeping one makes this travel gift $10 each. Score!

One of the coolest features of Tile Mate is its ability to find your phone on silent. Just double tap the button on your tile mate and your phone will start ringing. It’s a great way to find a lost phone on silent if you don’t have access to Find My iPhone or a similar service. Again, it’s another great gift idea for him or her.

With a tile mate, you’ll never worry about losing the keys to your AirBNB or rental car again. Just don’t lose your phone and keys at the same time!

If you want to know more about packing cubes, check out my packing cube video here. These cubes keep everything organized when I’m traveling. Thistravel accessory is perfect for people who love organizing. So, if there’s a world-traveling Marie Kondo superfan in your life, get these for her!

These packing cubes come in packs of four. Their size is just perfect for a traveler’s needs.

Inside a packing cube you could fit two pairs of flats, a whole outfit, or three pairs of jeans. They work well in your luggage or your carry-on. They stack up so nicely in a carry-on bag.

This travel shoe bag can fit one pair of shoes and a pair of sandals or 3 pairs of flats, and I love that it keeps my shoes separate from my other clothing. It also has a nice mesh material that lets your shoes breathe a bit. If you’re looking for travel gifts for him, get this in black, and of course pink is the perfect travel gift for her.

Traveling with a full-size umbrella is a pain, and it’s also annoying to have to find and buy one if you forgot to pack yours. Nobody likes to run errands on vacation!

This mini umbrella is the perfect solution. It’s a practical travel gift idea for him or her. Ladies can easily store this in their handbags. And guys, you can slip it into your backpack or carry-on. Get all the protection of an umbrella without wasting the space. Just make sure to leave it in your luggage so you don’t forget it on your next trip.

Can you really give someone laundry detergent as a gift? I say, yes! This is great for people backpacking through Europe. It’s actually the best travel gift for everyone. These packs are fool-proof, and they come with a drain stopper too!

They work in any sink or tub, it’s pre-measured, and it easily fits in a backpack or carry-on. It’s a unique travel gift for people who travel for work too.

BLOOPERS!

BLOOPERS!

Who doesn’t love bloopers and outtakes?!? I know that traveling the world sounds glamorous… And trying to capture it all on video for my channel, well that’s another story! A TRAVEL Q & A

A TRAVEL Q & A

Welcome to a new segment on my channel, a Q&A where you send me your travel dilemma, and I share my experiences and do a little research to answer your questions. I hope you find this information useful and valuable!

Question #1:

How many cities should/could I visit in a one week timeframe if traveling abroad?  Mandy-Austin, TX

I recommend traveling abroad for more than a week.  It is so hard to fly to a foreign country, get acclimated, see all you want to see and get back home in 7 days.  I’d suggest staying for 2 weeks if possible.

If you only have a week, I would stay in no more than 3 cities.  Remember, you not only have travel time to the foreign country, but you will have travel time in between the cities.  You want to make sure you have enough time to see everything you want to see as well as have some downtime to relax on your vacation.

The type of city is something else to think about when booking your trip.  You might want to visit a large city, then a small town, then another large city.  Break it up, and take a breather between all the chaos of large cities.

Finally, if you really need to maximize the number of locations on your week abroad, stay longer in cities at the beginning of your trip, and shorter at the end.  The beginning of your trip, you are jet lagged, you don’t understand the transportation systems, and your not sure how to get around. The longer you are in a foreign country, the more acclimated you become, and the quicker and easier it is for you.

Question #2:

Hotels vs. Airbnb, what are the pros?

Hotel Pros:

I choose hotels when in a big group or traveling solo.  I, honestly feel a little safer in a hotel with people around me when I’m alone, and hotel amenities make life a little bit easier.

Remember, the hotel staff are there to look after you.  The concierge will book restaurants, tours and entertainment.  The front desk staff will provide your key and the bellmen will show you to your room.  Not all hotels have these perks, but they are really nice to have. And as a bonus, your breakfast is usually included.  I also find that throughout the world, hotel rooms are generally the same. At a hotel, you won’t have to spend time figuring out the coffee maker, or how the shower works.  Another advantage to hotels are the bookings. You typically don’t have to pay in advance which is a great perk.

Transportation to and from a hotel is usually easier as well.  Hotels are well marked, well known and simpler to find. Taxi drivers don’t always know where the door to your Airbnb is located.

As a final note, I like to stay in hotels when visiting for just a day or two; short stays work very well for hotels. If I’m only in town a couple days, I want to be focused on my itinerary of attractions and events, not the logistics.  In summary, I choose hotels when I need convenience and ease.

Airbnb Pros:

I truly enjoy Airbnbs when I want to live like a local.  It’s just delicious to walk out of an apartment in the morning to grab my coffee instead walking through a lobby full of people.

Airbnbs may be a bit more difficult to maneuver at check-in, but once you’re there, you feel at home.  You typically have an entire apartment, which means more space to unpack, relax and sprawl. They are also great when traveling with one or two friends, as you can sit and relax and enjoy each other’s company, as if you were at home.

Airbnbs are also a great option for people with dietary restrictions.  You typically have a kitchen, where you are able to cook your own meals according to your diet.  I, personally, make a protein shake every morning with my greens and supplements, and it’s great to have access to a blender, glasses and cutlery.

Finally, I choose Airbnbs for my extended stays.  If I’m staying for more than 3 days, I want more space to relax and work.  I also want to get the local vibe, meet the neighbors and visit the grocery store and a local coffee shop.  Hotel rooms just don’t provide these feelings.

Kathleen, thank you so much for your question; I hope you found my thoughts helpful.

Best Packing Cubes on Amazon

Best Packing Cubes on Amazon

The planning and anticipation of adventure travel, or any kind of travel, is incredibly exciting, but packing can be a real chore. Even the most organized women traveling for pleasure or business find themselves getting a little anxious when it’s time to pack for a trip. Luggage packing cubes are one of those indispensable travel accessories that are absolute must-haves according to all the top travel influencers. From Ultralight packing cubes to packing cubes for backpacking, these luggage organizers will you’re your packing and unpacking a breeze. Once you start using them, you’ll find packing cubes useful to the point that you’ll never leave home without them.  You’ve come to the right place if you are looking for the best packing cubes on Amazon.

What are packing cubes?

Packing Cubes are simply zippered cases in varying sizes that fit neatly inside your travel bag. Think of them as drawers in your dresser. Never again do you have to arrive at a hotel, open your suitcase, and be faced with a squashed pile of clothes that needs to be sorted. The best quality packing cubes allow you to keep your suitcase tidy and organized. Your clothes stay separate and wrinkle-free. Your vacation wardrobe is neatly grouped with tops in one large packing cube, bottoms in another, and your underwear in a separate one. When you arrive at your destination, you simply take the lightweight packing cubes out of your suitcase and place them in the wardrobe. You can get straight to having fun without wasting precious time unpacking or looking for things.

Are packing cubes worth it?

Packing Cubes or suitcase organizer cubes are travel essentials for women and you won’t regret investing in them. This travel gear allows you to tame your vacation wardrobe and they’re huge time savers too.

Where can you buy packing cubes?

They’re available online and you’ll be spoiled for choice, from cheap packing cubes to top-of-the-line ones for women who love luxury experiential travel and want nothing but the best.  That being said, I most often purchase my packing cubes on Amazon.com.

How to use packing cubes?

It’s best to buy packing cubes in different sizes and place similar items together, such as socks and underwear in one and shirts and t-shirts in another. Rolling your clothes is recommended as it makes it easy to see everything that’s inside (your entire wardrobe is visible through the mesh top). If you’re traveling with a partner, by using packing cubes you can save space and pack everything in one bag (a great way to avoid airline baggage fees), yet still have your separate cubes.

Here’s my pick of some of the top travel packing cubes available on Amazon along with their pros and cons:

This packing cubes set contains 6 pieces, 2 each of large, medium, and small, sized to fit perfectly in a 24-inch suitcase. The nylon and wool materials are washable. The set has a breathable mesh design that makes it easy to see what’s inside. Each piece has a handle for convenient carrying. However, I found the material to be quite thin and the zippers of poor quality. No doubt the set offers value-for-money in terms of quantity, but it’s not the highest quality. Go for the Vallilon Design only if you’re on a very tight budget, for example, if you’re going to use the packing cubes backpacking. This set may also be suitable for the first time traveler who’s testing the waters and is unsure if or when they’ll use the organizers again.

BUY NOW: Vallion Design Packing Cubes

The Bago Packing Cubes set containing 4 pieces (2 large and 2 medium) of travel packing organizers, this set includes 3 reusable plastic zip bags for sealed storage of liquids. Bago’s durable nylon packing cubes are ideal for women who travel around the world and will use them for years to come. You can pack by destination, weather, or events. For example, if you’re going on a business trip, organize your clothes by the day based on your schedule with one each of top, bottom, undergarments, and shoes. If you’re headed from cold weather to a sunny beach, sort your vacation wardrobe accordingly. The different colors, quality zippers, and see-through mesh-top make organizing easy. You’ll save both time and hassle, avoid clutter in your hotel closet, and keep your clothes safe from spills and stains. This set gets my vote for the best lightweight packing cubes. The ultralight material means you don’t have to worry about airline baggage charges!

The Go4Free 6-piece travel organizer set contains 1 extra-large, 2 large, 2 medium, and 1 small packing cube. It comes in lots of colors, so if you’re looking for purple or pink packing cubes, look no further. The variety of sizes means you can fit them into a check-in suitcase as well as a carry-on. The cubes are made of high-quality, water-resistant, durable nylon material with a net for ventilation and visibility. This set ticked all the boxes for me. It’s easy to see why Gear4Free is a favorite with so many YouTube influencers!

The Dot & Dot Packing Cube set is lightweight and durable fabric, strong nylon handles, and double seams make this set of 6 mesh packing cubes ideal for everything from business trips to cruise holidays and camping adventures to luxury travel. The premium quality zippers will last for years and keep things securely in place. The sizes of the organizers are ideal to fit everything, even on longer trips. And best of all, the organizers come in four different colors to make color-coded packing easy. You can even use them to organize your closets at home. I found them to be the most intuitively designed and highest quality out of all the packing cubes Amazon sells. Since they’re not huge, I’d recommend the Dot & Dot for your carry-on luggage

To more efficiently utilize your suitcase space, consider the Travel Wise Packing Cube set of 5 gray and black packing cubes that come in other colors too. Made from an extra-durable yet lightweight material that will stand the test of time, this set is designed for international luxury travel. It features a mesh design so you’ll never have to frantically search for things. The strong zippers are fast and reliable to keep items secure and prevent them from moving in transit. The nice big handles make the organizers easy to grab. I have to say the material of this packing cubes set feels thicker and of better quality packing cubes than any of the ones I ordered.

The Gonex Packing Cube set that packs quite a punch with no less than 9 pieces. The set includes 1 extra-large, 2 large, and 2 medium packing cubes, along with 2 smaller ones and 2 shoe bags with pull tabs. That’s enough organizers to store all your clothing and keep dirty clothes separate from clean ones. I think this set is a great choice for women traveling together and looking to save some money on travel accessories. The honeycomb water-repellent fabric and high-quality zippers are made to last for years. What I didn’t like is the fact that the netting is limited to the sides of the cubes, making it harder to see what’s inside. Also, the handles felt a little clunky and cumbersome. If you are looking for the best packing cubes for value but don’t want to compromise on quality, Gonex is your best bet. Also available as small carry-on packing cubes in a set of 4. These have a slightly softer structure that will allow you to stuff a little bit more into your carry-on.

BUY NOW: Gonex Packing Cubes

One of my favorites, and the Packing Cube set I kept was the Gonex slim, carry on packing cube set.  I loved this 4 piece set because they are all the same size, and they fit perfectly in my carry on suitcase.  They have a great zipper and a sturdy handle, and they have just enough mess to see everything I packed.  These Gonex luggage organizers are ideal for all of my girl’s weekend getawayBuy Gonex Slim Packing Cubes here.

Conclusion

Whether you love laid back luxury and experiential travel or you’re an intrepid adventurer who wants to explore every corner of the world, packing with packing cubes is something you’ll never regret. Every travel influencer swears by them. The cost of expandable packing cubes should not be a big consideration since they range in price from $16 to $30. Your decision should be based on the number of packing cubes you want, the variety in size, the colors that appeal to you, how much visibility you need, and of course, the quality of the material and zippers.

Which is the best packing Cube Set? Based on my evaluation and Amazon packing cubes reviews, I’m keeping the Gonex for my carry-on and the Gear4Free for my large check-in bag. I didn’t get a chance to try out the Eagle Creek Packing Cubes, but if you have used them, let me know what you think.
