Travel Preparation & Planning

A great trip starts with the right preparation and planning. Finding a destination that will suit your travel style is important. Are you looking to escape to the beach, hit a desert trail, or explore exotic cuisine? Think about what destinations you are ready to explore and comfortable with – a shorter, direct flight may be important to you and narrow down your destinations initially. A domestic trip may also be an option. Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, travel insurance is beneficial for any trip that takes you 100 miles or more from home, including a road trip! One of the benefits of traveling as you get older is freedom. You may have more PTO to use up or the ability to create your own schedule leaving more time for travel than ever before. Shoulder season travel is a great option if you’re able to take advantage of the months leading up to and after the busy season. This time of year, generally affords discounts, less crowds, and oftentimes a more relaxing and enjoyable trip.

Once you have picked a destination, it’s important to consider accommodations, transportation, and your itinerary too. I love looking into resorts that have adults-only areas like pools or even a suite tower for a relaxing trip. If you are looking into activities like scuba diving or golf, check on availability and make reservations in advance if necessary. If you are willing to leave your travel schedule more open – don’t be afraid to call the day of to book a tee time or activity, there may be a cancellation that you can take advantage of, just don’t count on this!

Travel Insurance

With any type of travel especially where you may be taking part in riskier activities than normal, finding the right travel insurance plan is important. Travel insurance should never be one size fits all. By visiting, you can easily plug in your trip and traveler details, and let the trusted algorithm recommend the best travel insurance plan for you. You can also view side-by-side comparisons of different plans from multiple providers all in one place. The easy-to-use filters on the left-hand side will help you narrow down plans by the exact benefits you are looking for. There are a variety of benefits for any kind of trip. For example, if you are looking for coverage for activities, select one of the sports benefits.  If you are looking for Hurricane and Weather coverage, filter by benefits to protect your trip in the event your home or destination are affected by hurricane season.

The best time to purchase travel insurance is usually within 10-21 days of making your initial trip deposit. Trip Cancellation plans continue to be the most popular option for travelers covering their non-refundable prepaid trip costs if certain requirements are met. Cancel for Any Reason plans allow you to cancel for any reason whatsoever up to 2 days before your trip for up to 75% reimbursement of your non-refundable prepaid trip costs. If you’re looking for the CFAR benefits, you will normally need to buy insurance within 1-21 days of your initial deposit. There are also time-sensitive benefits that make purchasing insurance early worthwhile. One of these benefits is the Pre-existing Medical Conditions waiver that many travelers look for. If you buy insurance within the stated timeframe from the initial deposit, usually the same day or within 2 weeks, you will get broader coverage and benefits like the Pre-existing Medical Conditions waiver depending on the specific plan.

If you or someone you are buying insurance for has a pre-existing health condition, you should seriously consider the likelihood of it reoccurring or flaring up during your trip. Ask yourself could it cancel or interrupt your travels? For plans without the Pre-existing Medical Conditions Waiver, normally a medical condition present prior to your travel insurance policy’s effective date would not be covered. Most plans have a look-back period which means the plan investigates your medical history, anywhere from 2 to 18 months, to check if your condition was treated or appeared during that time. Comprehensive plans with a Pre-existing Medical Conditions waiver will give you coverage if you buy your travel insurance plan the same day or within a set number of days after your first trip deposit. This doesn’t usually add to the cost of the plan and is a great incentive to buy early!

International Travel Insurance

When traveling to another country, it’s important to fill the gap where your regular health insurance may not offer coverage. Emergency Medical Coverage may not have been your first priority when you first started traveling but with 2021 travel, we all realize its importance. It can save you from a costly bill if your US health insurance plan is not accepted in another country. It’s important to note COVID-19 is treated the same as any other illness, so Emergency Medical and Evacuation benefits will cover your otherwise non-refundable prepaid trip cost if you were to become ill with COVID-19 during your travels. Trip Cancellation plans give you protection if you the traveler, your companion, a family member, or your business partner become ill before your trip and you cannot travel. Trip Interruption also provides reimbursement of non-refundable prepaid trip costs and expenses for your return home if you or your companion are diagnosed with COVID-19 while on your trip. Trip Delay will cover hotel expenses and meals if you are delayed through quarantine required by a physician.

Final Travel Insurance Thoughts

Finding the right travel insurance does not have to be complicated or time-consuming. By visiting you can easily find the recommended plan for you from the world’s leading providers. Always be sure to read your plan details for benefits and all the information you need like proof of cancellation. Plans do allow you to buy coverage up until the day before you leave so wherever your travels take you, be sure to protect them with peace of mind from Travel Insurance Master.

Our first item is an all-in-one travel kit, that makes it easy for your man to pack. This convenience kit for men features 20 items that every man needs when he travels from razors to shaving cream, Advil, toothpaste and even some toenail clippers. This is the best part about it, on the inside there are 40 travel size items so you do not have to go out and buy each individual little item for your man, it’s all in here and ready for you. There is a comb, there is toothpaste and a toothbrush, a little razor, basically, everything you need, the guys can just put this in their backpack or in their suitcase and off they go.

The second item I have is a RFID Protected Passport Cover. You can see right here, it’s a nice chocolate color and on the inside, you put your passport here and you can put a couple of credit cards here as well. I really like this, it’s a nice feel, it feels very luxurious and for under $20, it’s a great deal.

The next item I have for you is a leather gorgeous Journal, you can see here, it is very nice packaging and has a piece of leather to wrap it up and they have beautiful pages lined pages on the inside, nice detail, you can see right here, really nice detail, I really think that this is great for a guy that likes to take notes or a guy that’s quite the planner on the trip. I like traveling with guys that are planners because I am not a planner, I’m a fly by the seat of my pants, kind of girl. This BEDSURE leather journal notebook is 5×7 inches and it has 240 pages, it’s easy to care for and actually looks better the more worn, it is.

So, the next item we have is a 66-piece FIRST AID KIT. First Aid Kits are extremely important and again, make your guy’s life a lot easier, all he has to do is take this, pop it in a suitcase and he is good to go. There are band-aids, there’s tape, there’s a little bit of Neosporin, actually there’s a pair of scissors as well in here, check out these little scissors which are great, not just for first aid but for other things. So, this is a great gift and it’ll keep your guys safe while he’s traveling, this small FIRST AID KIT made by thrive, has 66 pieces, it is light and small and easy to pack. There are medical supplies for emergencies, survival, hiking, camping and just general travel and cycling.

And next is a great headlamp, the next item I think is great to have whether you are camping or not camping, I always take a head torch or a headlight with me. This is a great one, I really like this there are several but I found that this one had all of the bells and whistles had the brightest light and everything I needed for under $20.

So, the next item I have on the list for your favorite guy are some graduated Compression Socks. I really like this set, super high quality, very masculine with the gray, nice graduated, it’s good for circulation and it’s great on an airplane. These physics Compression Socks are 70% Nylon and 30% Spandex. They come in different colors but I found these to be the most attractive for the man in your life.

This ALPINE SWISS men’s wallet is very luxurious for being under $20 and fits perfectly in his back pocket. This is a RFID Protected Wallet as well and RFID Protection means that somebody can’t come by with that, whatever in their bag and swipe your credit card numbers. So, I thought this army green was a very handsome color as well.

Next, this is a great gift for a guy, of course, that’s also a great gift for a girl if you’re buying or you can buy couples, this is a very nice mask to wear when you’re on the airplane or it’s really light outside, and you want to take a nap. This eye mask is made by MZOO and it is a perfect mask for men its 3D contoured cup, makes it very easy on your eyes.

Next, you’re going to love this DUDE WIPES. Yep, just give your guys some dude wipes, they’re disposable, you can flush them, need I say anymore? these were only like $2. So, if you need an extra gift but don’t want to spend any money, this is your item.

This is a professional stainless steel nail clipper kit including 15 pieces of nail, clippers, trimmers and even scissors. Perhaps your guy won’t take every item but this has everything you could need and if he takes it, you can actually borrow some of it, it’s quite heavy though so be prepared that this is going to take up a lot of your weight. It’s probably like a pound and a half, so, just take note if you’re backpacking, this is probably not it, if you’re going on a luxurious trip, it might be a great fit

If you have some great ideas for guys for the holiday season, for the birthday, for anniversaries, please let me know especially if it’s under $20 because I will definitely add them to the next video. Also, if you’re interested in items over $20, make sure to watch the video of luxury items for that man in your life.

So, the next item on the list is this very nice army green flask and what I really like about it is the top here is connected, so you can’t lose it, and additionally it has a little funnel, so you can fill up with your favorite alcohol. Also, it’s quite large, so I think that this is a great fit because then you can share what’s in the flask with your man. This Hip Flask is made of stainless steel and holds 12 ounces, it comes in multiple colors so make sure to click the link below and see all of your options available to you.

So, the next item I have on the list is a very nice very lightweight, sort of a canvas style with a little clip here, you can see the clip right there. This will hold all of your guy’s electronics, so, you can put all your cords here, you can put batteries here, anything you want, little clips here, you know, maybe his Bose speakers or his Earpods or anything like that. I really like this, this is good for any traveler, not just a man but I got it in black, just so, it would be more attractive to the dudes. The 32-ounce motivational water bottle and time marker has a straw, it’s BPA free and is leak-proof. It comes in multiple colors but I thought the black was the most masculine. It actually has a straw in it, it’s got a little hook that you can hook. One thing I like about this bottle, it’s quite skinny, so it will fit in most backpacks. I also like here that this is a lock and then you can pop it open and have a drink and then lock it, so, it doesn’t leak. So, this is a great fit I really thought this was a fantastic water bottle and you can see exactly how much you’ve had to drink.

Travel PILLOW special is the fact that it is a hundred percent pure memory foam, it’s comfortable and breathable and machine washable. So, this is a neck pillow, I think this is memory foam and it feels so good, girls I’d buy one for myself as well. This is very, very nice, you can hook it onto your backpack or anything, and even though this looks extremely bulky, look what happens? it folds up and squishes up into a little tiny of course, my hands aren’t very strong but it squishes up and fits inside, this little tiny memory foam bag. So, I think this is one of the best necks pillows I have found, especially for under $20.

Next, we have a dopp kit again not like the first one that’s full, this one is empty but what I like about this one is it is a hanging dock kit; you can see here the hanger and then there’s plenty of space, and it said there are 17 pockets in here where you can put things. So, this is a bit bulky, I don’t recommend this if you’re trying to be super-efficient in your traveling, but this is actually a very nice gift, a little bit of detail right here, high quality canvas, looks really nice and would be a great gift.

So, the next five items and actually the last five items in the 20 under $20 for the man in your life are all electronics or have to do with filming, this cam kicks remote control CAMERA SHUTTER with Bluetooth wireless technology is perfect for every day and every vacation. You can actually buy this and get two of them at once, it usually comes with a little chain here, so you can wrap it around your arm but I love this, it has saved me for all of my selfies and everything like that I’m using. This universal travel adapter has an all-in-one international AC plug, it has fast charging and it has four USB ports. It covers the US, UK, EU, Australia and more than 150 countries. Look how nice this is, and nice carrying case and this is a universal charger and there are the outlets here, you can plug in here depending on what where you are from and what outlets you use. I just really like this one because it had the nice carrying case, it doesn’t take up a lot of room, it’s actually very lightweight and very efficient and I thought it was very masculine as well.

And next, this wall mount has a multi-function design, four USB charger ports and three AC outlet plugs and it has a built-in surge protector. For the gentleman who is into his electronics and this is primarily for traveling domestically in the U.S, Mexico or Canada, this is the only plug on here. This is three plugs and four USB ports, I think this was a great find, it’s very lightweight, it’s very easy to use, it’s also very easy to see in a backpack, so you can pull it out and if you’re at the airport you can plug this in and then plug everything else in at once. I thought this was great, I’ve looked at several items but I thought this one was one of the best.

The next item I have is a PORTABLE TRIPOD, the reason I’m not showing you the PORTABLE TRIPOD is because I’m filming on the PORTABLE TRIPOD. It weighs about three pounds and it extends to five feet, it’s fantastic, it has a lever that goes like this, and it has been a lifesaver for all of my filming and all of my selfies. So, if your guy likes to take photographs or take photographs of the two of all, the try PORTABLE TRIPOD is fantastic, and also, it shrinks down to about this size.

The next item, and the final item in the 20 under $20, is a GORILLAPOD, and a GORILLAPOD has a little ball where you can wrap around a tripod they’re only about this big and you can spend 50 or $60 on one but you can also spend under 20. They’re about this big, you put your camera on top and then you wrap, it around a tree or around a pole and it’s a great addition to any of your photography and travel videoing. This GORILLAPOD is made by JOBY, it is lightweight and flexible and can hold seven times its weight, the flexible legs maneuver 360 degrees, so, you can wrap this around any obstacle for the perfect shot.

I hope that you have enjoyed these 20 items under $20 for the man in your life. Please leave a comment below and let me know if you have any additional suggestions. Also, if you’re looking to buy any of these items, remember go to the description below and click on the amazon link.

Best Sandals to Pack & Wear While Traveling (I Tried Out 16 Different Pairs)

Best Sandals to Pack & Wear While Traveling (I Tried Out 16 Different Pairs)

Sandals for Travel, The Abundant Traveler

After years and years of travel I know just how important a comfortable sandal for travel can be! I decided to try out 16 different shoes to help find the best ones for you. Whether you’re looking for stylish, athletic, comfort, or color I’ve covered them all.

Read through my reviews below and you’ll be sure to not have any buyer’s remorse!

All KEEN shoes are known for being high quality. This sandal for travel is great because of the higher traction sole and durability. This shoes tends to be a little wide, so keep that in mind if you have a narrow foot.

These shoes are on the higher end price-wise, but are absolutely worth it! I love the style and high-quality these offer. Personally for travel I prefer a sandal with higher coverage to protect your foot and stay in place with miles of walking, but a little bulky for your suitcase.

If you are looking for a lightweight travel sandal to use for city walking, these are great! With a variety of 12 colors you are sure to find one that matches any outfit.

A name synonymous with quality, you can’t really go wrong with Birkenstock. I travel with these sandals all the time, and they are my favorite! Do remember that these shoes come in European sizes, so you might need to figure out the conversion. For example, I am a size 9 1/2 U.S., and wear a 40 or 41 in these shoes.

The microfiber soft footbed in these sandals for travel makes them ultra comfortable! You’ll find the sole is very flexible, and the style is more on the athletic side. There are several colors to choose from.

I use Chaco’s all the time for my travel hiking and water shoes. You can adjust each strap as needed to make them comfortable and secure. Check out the color options available!

This sandal looks beautiful on your feet with some nice braiding! If you like a little height in your sandal, this one offers a 1 1/2 inch heel.

This is a classic travel shoe that you can wear walking the streets of a city or hiking in the hills. I personally love Teva’s and find them a little bit softer than Chaco’s which are similar to me.

Take this shoe from day to evening easily with its versatile style. The 1/2 inch platform and soft leather really make this travel sandal great as well.

Definitely an affordable option, these crocs combine value and comfort. Extra lightweight they are perfect for a beach or pool vacation. They do not come in half sizes, I recommend sizing up.

I love the combined style and price point of this shoe. The 1 1/2 inch heel gives this sandal for travel a bit of pizazz, and the foam footbed makes you feel like you’re walking on a cloud. I’m planning on keeping a pair of these shoes!

Several colors and a memory foam footbed make these sandals a great choice. The price point is great too! I ended up ordering these in a tan color to keep.

These travel sandals feature an all-day comfort footbed and genuine leather upper. The details on the top give it a little visual interest. Great for a wider foot.

I love the cork wrapped detail on the sides of these sandals, and the style is on point too! You’ll find a variety of colors to choose from.

A rubber sole gives these cute sandals traction when walking all day. Each strap is adjustable for optimal support.

A great find in 5 different unique  colors, I like the true sandal look with this option. Do note the larger sizes don’t seem to come in half sizes.

Let me know your favorite sandals for travel in the comments below!

Review of Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal Resort

Review of Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal Resort

The Bahia Principe Akumal is a luxury resort located in Akumal Mexico along the Mayan Riviera. In this video I provide tips, advice, and reviews on my experience at the Bahia Principe resort.

I’m Kim, the Abundant Traveler and welcome to the Bahia Principe Luxury Resort.

I am staying here for three nights. I’m going to check out everything there is to do from enjoying volleyball to eating at all the different restaurants I can get my hands on, drinking some cocktails and swimming in the beautiful Riviera Maya ocean. I cannot wait, so let’s go check out this hotel. Come on with me.

It’s awfully quiet right now but normally there are six to seven thousand people that are staying at these different properties. I don’t know how many stay in this hotel but there are four hotels in this particular compound.

There’s one called Coba, that is off the water. The one I’m staying at is luxury which is on the ocean. There’s another one called Tulum, that is also on the ocean and then the Cian Khan which is actually named after the biosphere south of Tulum, that is actually on the golf course.

So, this property, if you’re traveling with a family, it is great for kids. If you’re traveling just with adults like I am, staying in the building number 83, that is adults only, there is a small restaurant there called Las Corales and they serve breakfast and lunch there.

The pool on that side is also for adults only and the beach is for adults only. So, it’s really nice if you’re planning on coming on an adult only trip.

So, now I’m going to take you on a little tour of my hotel room, it looks like the images that they have online. If you want to book this property, I will share the link in the description below for how I booked this property.

This is the hotel bathroom. You have a shower and you have a bathtub here and yes, it’s got reverb. But you can see that I have two double beds, I have a sitting area, I have a TV as well and a little balcony and I do like staying on the first floor. I get to see all the animals in the evening and it’s been really nice.

There’s actually an extra bed right here as well, so you could have a guest if you want to sleep really close to the person, there’s two beds so you could get four plus maybe one person here as well.

The mini bar is here and they put some goodies in it, oops, they put goodies in it snacks and everything so, and they refill it every day with everything that you could possibly want.

They also have robes and they have a robe there which has been great to have and little slippers as well and of course they have a safe. No matter what you do, you want to keep your passport in the safe, just a big tip when you’re traveling overseas in general. Always leave your passport in the safe at the hotel and bring some other form of identification with you, so when you’re using a credit card and they need identification, they have something else or if something happens to you, you have one form of identification but if you lose that, you still have your passport so you don’t have to go to the embassy and get a new passport. So, that is a major tip for when you’re traveling overseas.

In addition to the main restaurants here, you have a couple extra things as well.

One, you have a sports bar and that sports bar is open in the evening and definitely the place for the guys if you want to go check out whatever sports are happening. There’s also a coffee shop where you can buy some of the delicious Mexican chocolates as well get some ice cream and have your espresso cappuccino or lattes. There is also a snack bar and the snack bar is open 24 hours a day, so when the restaurants in the buffet are not open the snack bar is open.

Inside the snack bar, it’s simple things like pizza, quesadillas, simple things like that and all you need is more love. If you’re here on a romantic getaway, you can have a special dinner behind this love sign, they set up a table and will serve you from one of the restaurants.

It is a great experience. I also saw last evening a big group of about 12 people having a delicious dinner out here as well having a big party for somebody’s birthday. We all need more love.

So, here’s the love sign and here is Frutos del Mar, this is a restaurant I went to last night and I had the whole grouper, that was freshly prepared caught today.

You can see here just behind me this is the map of the entire property. This restaurant is Las Corales (it’s hard for me to pronounce) and this is open for breakfast and lunch only and then you have the Acuario which is a snack bar and the snack bar is open 24 hours a day.

The Dolce Vita is the Italian restaurant. And then, they also have the Frutos del Mar which is the fish restaurant, and then this right here is the main buffet dining area and underneath you have the spa. The fine dining restaurant is here, Artists Delicious, I heard you can get Hua and all sorts of goodies there as well.

This is Alebrije, that is the Mexican restaurant, it’s usually La Dolce Vita and from here I would say it’s about a six-minute walk, from here over to the adults area, well worth walking unless it’s the middle of the day and then it’s definitely time to take the train with the sweet guys that’ll pick you up and play macarena in the train for you.

Since this hotel is in the middle of basically nowhere, the taxis are quite expensive. So, if you’re going to be staying here, I recommend staying maybe three days and spend most of your time on property. I went to aqua mall and it cost 270 pesos each way which is around 12, 13 dollars with the current exchange rate, but I felt it was quite expensive, I would recommend that you stay part-time in an all-inclusive to enjoy the relaxing time and then spend part time in a city or a little closer to a particular town either Tulum or actually in Akumal or in Playa Del Carmen.

The property is very spread out and it requires a lot of walking especially if you are staying in the adult only area. The good news is that there is a trolley system that operates 24/7, and this little trolley will zip you around the entire complex from the Oceana disco or to your dinner reservation at the different restaurants or between the different swimming pools.

Each day while you’re here, they have lots of events whether you want, water volleyball or you want to do yoga. There’s also a theater that in the evenings, they have theater for the kids mostly if you go to the main entrance which is by the highway, they have a disco and a casino and if you’re a shopper, there are plenty of places to shop, there is a gorgeous jewelry store inside the lobby, there’s also a snack shop with lots of little trinkets and then if you go to the Hacienda Isabel where the casino and the discotec are, there are plenty of little shops there.

So, I’ve just come into the lobby and it is a beautiful lobby, it is gigantic, I can’t imagine what this is like when this place is full but the reception is over here, you can see across the way there’s a beautiful sculpture here as well, plenty of places to sit and in the evenings, you can come down here and grab a cocktail they have some premium liquors and a bar here as well. You can see behind me right here, there is an ATM but this particular ATM is only US dollars, so make sure when you are going to an ATM here on property that you ask for a ride on the train to the Hacienda Isabel or the Hacienda Isabel where the disco and the casino are around the corner there on property is an ATM with Mexican pesos. And, I find that in general ATMs using your debit card is the best way and the best exchange rate when you are traveling here in Mexico.

This is the main pool, it’s packed during the day, lots of people it doesn’t matter what time of the day is you can actually go to the bar and grab a cocktail or grab some juice. Also, over here they have the list of things that they’re doing every single day whether it’s yoga or the beach volleyball. You can see just here; all you have to do is pop over here and see what the events are. Also, in this area you have the gym, I did not go to the gym but I did walk in, it was really nice and around the corner is the spa and I definitely recommend that you go to the spa while you’re here and make sure to ask for Frida, I had a Mayan massage and it was absolutely delicious last evening, it was very lymphatic-ish, lots of oil in my hair and all over, it was a great massage and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Make sure when you’re coming to this particular all-inclusive or any for that matter, you bring plenty of cover-ups and some flip-flops, none of the restaurants will allow you to go into the restaurant without a cover-up and your flip-flops. And also, you can see this beautiful tile work here, this is actually very hot during the day so when you’re up and moving around you definitely are going to the bar and getting a drink, you definitely want to be wearing your flip-flops. I’m not sure if you’re aware the Riviera Maya and all of the resorts and everything were actually cut out of the jungle. So, it is quite jungly and humid, it’s extremely humid, it’s September, it’s about 19 degrees and probably 120% humidity but here in the jungle, you have lots of animals and you can see them come out, some come out during the day, some come out in the evening, you can see iguanas all of the time, you can see iguanas on the beach with you, you can see them running through the jungle or on the path so be prepared that they’re little critters running around.

I am now walking over to the beach and this is the main beach, there are people out here that are going to come bring you drinks, you can actually get food out here as well and speaking of food. Not only do we have the buffet and all of the restaurants that I mentioned, you actually can do room service as well, no matter what you need in your room all you have to do is ask your call room service and you can ask your butler, that’s very cool. This particular hotel has butlers in every single building, so if you need anything for your room whether you need pillows or sheets or extra water towels, anything like that, all you have to do is go to the end of the hallway and ask your butler.

A recommendation that I have for everyone staying at this all-inclusive or other ones here in Mexico is have some small money with you even though your meals are all-inclusive, the staff is always appreciative of a little bit of a tip. So, I tend to leave depending, you know, maybe 50 pesos for breakfast or 100 pesos for dinner or just something really nice a little extra for them, it’s really appreciated.

So, the best way to get to this hotel is to come into the International Airport of Cancun, and from Cancun you can take a taxi but I definitely recommend booking a shuttle in advance, I like to take happy shuttle and I’ve left a link in the description below for taking a private shuttle all the way to this hotel, it is 56 miles from the Cancun airport to this hotel and also if you want to take some day trips, then it is 24 miles you can take a taxi to playa, if you want to go shopping at Quinta Avenida or fifth avenue, they you can also go to Akumal, I went to Akumal and swim with the turtles one day. And also, if you’re interested in going to Tulum, Tulum is 13 miles away. And a tip for coming into the Cancun airport as I mentioned previously, go ahead and book your transportation in advance, you kind of run the gauntlet for all the timeshares, they’re trying to get you to come over, they’ll give you a ride if you’ll go see your place. So, it is best to go ahead and book your transportation in advance, run through that gauntlet go straight outside and make sure somebody is outside waiting for you with your name on it. Makes life so much easier.

So, let me know in the comments below what you think of this hotel, also let me know any all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya that you think that I must try. I’m Kim the abundant traveler, I’ll see you on the next adventure. Thanks so much for watching.

Know Before You Go: Tulum

Know Before You Go: Tulum

Welcome to my Tulum travel guide!

Tulum is one of the biggest travel destinations near Cancun. Located on the Mayan Riviera, I put together a video of tips, advice, and more things to know before you visit Tulum.

I’m Kim, the abundant traveler and welcome to the beautiful beach town of Tulum Mexico. Today, I’m going to be sharing with you a few things that you need to know before you come to this gorgeous city in the Riviera Maya.

First of all, let me just show you the beautiful beaches in Tulum. Tulum is known for its gorgeous beaches, it’s healing water, I don’t know what it is about swimming in the ocean here, it’s also known for being a very sustainable town and it’s also known for being a foodie town. So, a couple of things to note it is about an hour and 45-minute drive from the Cancun Airport and it’s best to go ahead and book your transportation from the airport before you arrive.

When you arrive in Cancun if you have not booked your transportation, you’re going to get accosted and you’re going to run the gauntlet with all of the timeshare people and people trying to sell you taxi rides and all of that, so go ahead and organize your transportation in advance.

I always use happy shuttle and I’ve left the link in the description below, they will do a private ride, they will do a luxury private ride, they will also do a shared ride, I always do the private ride in a van and it’s perfect for me.

So, before you leave the airport in Cancun, I recommend that you go ahead and go to an ATM and get some pesos in Cancun, that way you have pesos, I also recommend that if you use an ATM, do not get American dollars, you’re going to pay more, it’s going to cost more and it’s always good to have Mexican pesos.

You want to have Mexican pesos in small increments in 20s and 50s and 100s because not everybody has change if you get 500-pesos notes. So, Tulum is a very laid back a low key, everything is slower in Tulum, there is something magical about this area if you’re looking for senor frogs or a mandala club, I suggest that you go to Cancun or Playa Del Carmen. If you’re looking for a laid-back low-key vacation, then Tulum is the one for you, definitely if you stay on the beach.

So, when you arrive in Tulum don’t be surprised, there are two very specific different areas of Tulum, you can either stay in Tulum Centro or the Puebla or the city or you can stay on the beach.

There is a big difference in style and lifestyle in Boho Chic or typical Mexican town and there is definitely a difference in price point. So, if you decide you want to stay in town, it is less expensive than staying on the beach. In town you have lots of shops for all your Mexican trinkets and gifts to take home to your friends, the hotels are relatively small and it is a little bit busier, it’s especially busy in the evening as well and I would suggest if you’re coming to Tulum and you want to stay in the city that you rent a car.

As far as renting a car, if you’re not comfortable with renting a car from Cancun and driving on the highway to Tulum, you can simply rent a car here through all of the main chains. I rented from alamo, they also have hertz budget, Europe car, all the main places and I actually spent twenty dollars a day including the extra insurance that they said they that it was required and I have had a car the entire time I was here.

Now, I am staying in the town this time would I recommend it the lifestyle is very different than staying on the beach, I’ve enjoyed having a car, I think every time I come to Tulum, I will have a car but I think I will come back to the beach always before when I’ve been in Tulum I’ve stayed on the beach.

Now the beach prices for hotels are two, three, four, five, six times as much as they are as staying in the city. If you’re going to stay at b Tulum which I’ve stayed before or nomad you’re going to be spending $600 plus a night.

There are a few hotels on the beach that are around $200 or 250 but the ones in town typically you can, I’m staying in town for 65 dollars and I actually have an apartment with a full-size kitchen, a beautiful pool and a gorgeous common area in the middle.

If you’re staying on the beach and you don’t want to rent a car, you can absolutely rent a bicycle, it’s one of the best things to do here in Tulum and it’s very boho chic to rent a bicycle, take your Instagram photos with your basket on the front of your bicycle, it’s a lot of fun but for me staying in town actually renting a bicycle was too far of a distance, it was about 15 plus kilometers each way and Tulum is always hot. So, I opted for a rental car that had air conditioning.

If you don’t want to ride a bicycle and you don’t want to rent a car, you can always walk or you can take taxis, just note that the taxis, make sure to take the real taxis that are the white cars with the red writing, the guys have an emblem and a uniform, just make sure before you get in the car and you shut that door that you ask what the price is before you go.

I think that the prices in Tulum are relatively fixed, you just want to know what you’re getting in for before you get in the taxi, you don’t want to be spending $50 when you only spent ten dollars for your tacos and your drinks.

So, what to bring when you’re coming to Tulum? if you’re going to be staying in the city it is hot and you don’t have the breeze off the ocean. So, I recommend bringing tank tops bring your bathing suit, bring a cover up, bring your flip-flops but you are going to be walking a lot so make sure to bring shoes that are comfortable to walk in for great distances as well.

Also, if you’re going to cenotes which are the sinkholes with the limestone sinkholes with the fresh water you want to bring maybe a snorkel and a mask, you also want to bring water shoes as well.

When you’re on the beach in Tulum, it is a beautiful white sand and the beaches are gorgeous you do not need swim shoes at all if you’re going to be on the beach in Tulum.

The other thing that all girls need to bring is the frizz spray, if you have a great frizz spray, please leave a comment below and let me know which one you use because there’s no way, don’t brush your hair, don’t need a hair dryer but this is what you end up with in Tulum in the tropics.

So, if you’re a shopper, there are two distinct ways of going shopping in Tulum up and down the beach road there are all these boho chic linens from Biodelete which is a town in the interior, gorgeous linens, beautiful macrame things and everything is quite expensive.

You can also go shopping for all of your typical Mexican artifacts and things your little bags from Chiapas your pottery from Puebla all of those things you can find in town. Also, if you decide you’re going to go to some place like Coba, you can check out the towns along the way they also have lots of trinkets that you can buy that are a little less expensive than in Tulum.

So, let’s talk a little bit more about staying on the beach. It is gorgeous over here and what is crazy is you are in the middle of the jungle. The jungle goes right up to the beach so most of the hotels have these beautiful tropical trees, the mangroves, they have coconut trees and all of that all surrounding these little tiny casitas and most of the hotels on the beach have casitas, most also have casitas facing the water as well as facing into the jungle.

So, be prepared when you’re in the jungle not only do you want to be bring sunscreen when you’re on the beach, you also want to bring bug spray because a lot of the restaurants on the beach are actually across the little road and they are in the middle of the jungle, it’s quite famous to go to a restaurant that doesn’t have a full menu, it simply has a chalkboard an open kitchen with an open fire and they are cooking whatever fish they have that day or whatever sustainable vegetables they have found.

A couple of recommendations that I have for you I was at Casa Jaguar the other night, it was delicious open-air kitchen and the food was phenomenal, I had a pork belly dish and salt cooked shrimp and it was so yummy.

Tonight, I’m going to go to kitchen table and that is one of those restaurants that the menu is simply the board as to what they have found today and what they pulled in from the sea. So, check out kitchen table and check out Casa Jaguar.

One of the restaurants I do recommend if you’re gluten free is to go to the real coconut where they make their pastries and their pancakes with plantain flour and coconut flour that’s where I had breakfast today and it was absolutely delicious.

Also, with a lot of the beach restaurants, they are typical prices that you would find in the United States, I would say it’s about $10 for a cocktail and dishes are 15 to $18, whereas in town, things are relatively inexpensive.

Another thing about the restaurants on the beach, they’re quite famous for adding their gratuity already 15 to 20 percent, so you want to ask them in advance if they have added gratuity already to the bill and the word for gratuity or tip is called ‘propina’.

Also, make sure in Mexico that you bring a Mastercard or a Visa. Usually, most restaurants and most places will take Mastercard or Visa but they don’t always take American express, I also think that the best exchange rate you’re going to find is when you pay with a credit card, usually they offer the best exchange rates when you get back home you see that you spend a couple of dollars less than you planned buying all of those gorgeous gifts.

So, Mexico is one of my favorite places to visit, I come to Mexico three to four times a year, I’m not always coming to the Riviera Maya the last couple of trips I have been here but I’ll go to Oaxaca, I’ll go to Mexico City, I’ll go to San Miguel De Allende. I just love Mexico; I swear I was Mexican in another life.

My suggestion is if you’re someone traveling on your own, just be aware be prepared, look around, don’t walk any down any dark streets by yourself and if you’re female and you rent a car, I don’t recommend driving too late at night by yourself. It’s just good to be safe no matter where you’re traveling in the world. I haven’t had any concerns or any issues with any time anywhere any city I’ve ever been to in Mexico and I continue to come back again and again and again.

So, Tulum is a great place to visit on your own, it’s a great place to visit for a romantic getaway in fact it’s very romantic. I definitely recommend that, it’s also a great place to come if you’re coming with a group of friends, I do not suggest coming with a family it’s kind of spread out and there’s not a lot to do for kids, so I really don’t recommend families.

So, that’s it for my tips on coming to Tulum for the first time, if you have any additional tips, I’d love to hear them, please leave them in the comments below, I hope that you have a great time in Tulum let me know your thoughts, I’m Kim the abundant traveler and I will see you on the next adventure, bye.

Of course, I start to film here and they’re cleaning the rooms, this is very sexy. Look the guy right there cleaning, it’s always the way they formed a table.

How was your Thanksgiving? Gobble Gobble

Happy belated Thanksgiving everyone!  I’m so thankful for you all and your support of The Abundant Traveler.   You are the reason why I’ve developed the brand.

I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday.  Many people I know felt that it was an odd Thanksgiving.  They weren’t sure if they should travel or congregate, and they were unsure of how to celebrate during these strange times.  Normally, I am part of a big ‘Friendsgiving’ where everyone shares their family traditions and food, but that was not meant to be this year.  Gratefully, some friends in my building had a small get together around 12, and one of my besties came over for turkey dinner late afternoon.  It was a great Thanksgiving despite the strange times, and I’m so grateful that I have incredible friends.
