The island of Krk is a Croatian island located in the north Adriatic Sea, near the city of Rijeka. It is also the most populous Croatian island with multiple towns and villages. Mostly rocky and hilly, Krk’s landscape varies from forests in the west to sunburnt ridges in the east. Moreover, the northwestern coast is steep and rocky because of the cold northeasterly wind bura. Due to its mild Mediterranean climate, the great geographical position with good transport connections, as well as natural and cultural beauty, Krk is called ‘The Golden Island’. We’ll cover things to do, beaches to visit, and where to stay on one of the best islands in Croatia, Krk.

Cres has several villages worth the visit. All of them are connected by a road that runs down the island. Here are the most interesting ones:

  • Lubenice – a historic village located on a 378-meters-high cliff that offers stunning panoramic views. With its beautiful architectural examples, pebble beaches, and plenty of chapels, Lubenice is a must-visit. During summer months, you can enjoy weekly music concerts under the open sky.
  • Valun – a picturesque fishermen village located between two pebble beaches surrounded by pine forests (Valun beach is a recommendation!). The village is only accessible by foot but full of bars, shops, and houses leaning on each other.
  • Osor – an ancient village founded by the Romans. During the summer months, the whole village is marked by art events and music festivals. Today, due to its protected harbor and small bays, Osor is an important location for seafarers. Moreover, from here you can reach the island of Losinj via a moving bridge.
  • Punta Kriza – a small village located far from the main road but with beautiful sea views. It is only accessible by a narrow road, so if you are looking for a spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the cities, this is a place to be. Enjoy nature, find peace in oak forests or observe wild animals. A naturist Camp Baldarin is located 3 km from the village.
  • Martinscica – a popular vacation complex full of beach bars, café bars, and beaches. Here you can also find Camp Slatina, a camp that has several times been awarded as the best campsite in Croatia.

The island of Cres has several attractions worth putting on the itinerary such as:

The island of Dugi Otok is the seventh-largest island on the Croatian coast, located west of Zadar. With a name that literally means a long island, Dugi Otok is 45 km long and known for its vineyards and orchards, which makes it a great alternative to more populous destinations. However, just like in the case of other Adriatic islands, topography varies from one side of the island to another. While the western part is tall and rugged, the eastern part is marked by pines, fig-trees, macchia, and olives. We’ll cover things to do, beaches to visit, and where to stay on one of the best islands in Croatia, Dugi Otok.

With a population of just 1500 inhabitants, the main villages are Sali and Bozava.

Sali is the main town and capital, as well as a great base for exploring the island. The city center is marked by a lovely little port surrounded by old townhouses and the ruins of Illyrian fortified settlements on the outskirts. Here you will also find a beautiful Gothic church from the 15th century with fragments of carved stone ornamentation, as well as early Renaissance alter paintings and Glagolitic inscriptions. The interesting fact is that the village was named after the saltworks which date back to the 12th century.

Bozava is a picturesque village also curled around a harbor, housing a hotel with a stone slab beach and sandy cove surrounded by a nearby pine forest.

On the other hand, let’s not forget to mention the southern side of the island where you can find Telascica, a spectacular nature park with six islets and rocks in the bay. Even though Telascica is known for its coves, small islands, and cliffs, it is also a great spot for observing flora and fauna. In other words, you may be able to see falcons that nest on the Telascica’s cliffs or dolphins swimming along the coast. Additionally, you can visit a small donkey sanctuary. Moreover, here you’ll pass a salt-water lake Mir, which is connected to the sea by underground channel. Each year, the lake is warmer than a sea during summer months and colder in winter.

Pag is an island in the north Adriatic Sea and the fifth-largest island on the Croatian coast. Due to its dry landscape with no trees or rivers and very little vegetation, Pag is a completely atypical island in Croatia. We’ll cover things to do, beaches to visit, and where to stay on one of the best islands in Croatia, Pag.

Thanks to its unusual topography, Pag has become well-known in the world of movies. Have you watched the Netflix comedy DJ Ibiza, Ridley Scott’s The Terror or the BBC series The Grand Tour? If so, you’ll recognize Pag as the film location.

Best Things To Do in Pag

An interesting fact is that the island of Pag brings together cultures that are not joinable – a lively, party town and a quiet, peaceful village. How? Well, the two main cities are Pag and Novalja. Let’s introduce each of them:

  • Novalja is the largest resort on the island, situated 25 km from the Pag city. A vibrant place full of sizzling nightlife, lively beach bars, and numerous party spots. Only 3 kilometers outside the town you will find Zrce, the biggest party place in Croatia during the summer months. This party beach is particularly famous for world-known underground dance music DJs and festivals (read Sonus and Hideout festival).
  • Pag town is an old town with laid-back vibes in the south. Unlike Novalja, here you can shop, explore traditions or go sightseeing. Wander around old, narrow streets constructed in squares. Discover old churches, duke palaces from the 15th century or the last remaining tower from the prior fortification. Here you can find lots of private accommodation options, as well as several hotels.

Pag is worth the visit if for nothing else, then for a traditional carnival. With both winter and summer versions, Pag’s carnival makes a great place to enjoy Pasko kolo, a traditional folk dance.

Interesting fact: Pag is best known for local cheese, wine, salt, lace, and lamb. Therefore, a unique souvenir to bring home is a traditional Pag’s intricate lace, a local white wine Zutica or sharp Pag’s cheese, prized throughout Croatia.

Extra tip: If you like bird-watching, head to Veliko Blato on the south of the island. It is a shelter for more than 150 birdlife species, so don’t forget to bring your camera.

Best Beaches in Pag

As most of the island is rocky without Mediterranean vegetation, you won’t find shade on Pag’s beaches, which can be tricky on hot summer days. Beaches are relatively untouristed with plenty of wide, shallow coves along the coast. Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Rucica Beach – a beach full of beautiful scenery made of rocks is ideal for those looking for peace and tranquility, as well as for hiking and trekking lovers.
  • Beretnica – a sandy beach surrounded by rocks makes a perfect place for sunbathing.
  • Suncana – the only beach with shades is also ideal for jogging and cycling.
  • Prnjica – a sandy beach with shallow water, popular among families with children.
  • Planjka – situated 1.5 km from Novalja, it’s the only beach on the island that has been awarded the blue flag. A combination of fine, hot sand and various interesting activities such as jet skis, paddle boats, and water slides, Planjka beach attracts numerous tourists.

Just outside the city center, there are several camps with some lovely beaches: Camp Simuni, Camp Kosljun, Camp Strasko, etc. The latter is ideal for families with children due to the beautiful beach with shallow water.

Where to Stay in Pag

If you’re looking to spend a little more time on one of the best islands in Croatia, Pag – I’ve outlined my hotel recommendations below:

Best Boutique Hotel in Pag –  Hotel Boskinac: In the hills and surrounded by vineyards, this boutique hotel has it’s own wine cellar and restaurant.

Best Luxury Hotel in Pag –  Hotel Kaneo: Steps from the beach, this modern and sleek hotel offers an outdoor pool, sauna, restaurant and bar.

Best Budget Hotel in Pag –  Sobe Bile: Located in the historic center or Pag, this budget stay is in a great location. Guests love the authentic Konoba restaurant on the ground floor, and breakfast is included.
